An epoxy floor coating can be made from two parts. It is easy to mix and adheres to any concrete floor, garage or other surface. Your floor will look much better than any conventional paint. It will have a very high gloss finish that will not only make it look great but also waterproof, mold, and mildewproof. When cured, epoxy floors are stain-proof and can be cleaned in the same way as your Teflon pot.
We have 30 years of experience and know that garage duty vehicle traffic should be at least 20 mgs. The military grade topcoat version is ideal for garages with big SUVs and tractor trailers. It can take all abuse that you can give it. You must be below 10mgs for commercial duty traffic with pallet jacks and forklifts. The Commercial Package for Garages can be used if you don’t like the flake appearance. It is also recommended that color flakes not be used in a workshop as it can cause difficulty when looking for dropped parts on the floor. Industrial applications or those who want the strongest epoxy floor coating possible, you should apply a coating of 23 mils or thicker. This is exactly what a ultra military system is for. It has a thickness of between 23 and 30 mils and a loss rating of 4 mg.
Our epoxy garage floors have been sold for over 30 years. We have also installed and tested every garage floor epoxy available so we know which ones work best. There isn’t a perfect epoxy coating that will work in every application. We offer many different epoxy systems and epoxies. An epoxy floor coating that is not intended for use is one of the most common mistakes.
Our experience has shown that 100% Aliphatic is the best epoxy for all purposes. It’s combined with a true epoxy topcoat. This topcoat has an abrasion rating that equals traffic load. If budget allows, a primer is a good option to increase your adhesion, overall coverage and coating thickness. These are all good things to consider when constructing an epoxy garage floor.

Epoxy flooring is the most versatile of all flooring options. Epoxy is very versatile. It can be used in almost all applications, as opposed to rubber roll-out mats that might not suit certain floor types. Epoxy can give you a dramatic appearance, it’s cost-effective when used as a DIY project and is extremely durable. It’s waterproof, mold and mildew-proof, and extremely chemical resistant.
Do you want to give your garage floor a final epoxy touch? The epoxy garage floor coating is vibrant and shiny. It will transform your garage into that showroom feel.
Epoxying your garage floor will make it look professional. This epoxy is impervious to oil stains, water and wipes clean easily like a kitchen countertop. Color chips and custom paint colors disguise imperfections in concrete. Anti-skid additives give you the grip that you need during winter conditions.
Epoxy coating concrete floors is just as simple as painting walls. However, as with painting, the key to success lies in the preparation work. The hardest part will be the actual application once the calculations are done, as well as the color and cleaning choices are out of the way.
For epoxy to bond well, it needs a surface that is even, slightly rough, but completely clean. This involves repairing any cracks and filling them before applying epoxy. Concrete must be at least 60 days old, and it must not have been sealed to allow epoxy to stick. It is possible to tell if your concrete floor has a sealer by checking to see if water beads on it. Also, etching solutions that don’t foam will be a sign of a sealed floor. If the floor is not peeling, it can be repainted.
However, stripping the floor does not clean it. Cleaning and etching the floor should be completed thoroughly. Any grease or dirt could cause epoxy adhesion problems. Different cleaners are made by different manufacturers. Before you decide which type of cleaner is best for your needs, make sure to read the ingredients. Chemical cleaners can be very effective or less effective. For $40 per day, you can rent a machine called floor maintainer.
Most epoxy coatings come as kits. After you have selected the one you like, you can determine if additional supplies are needed. Although manufacturers may recommend two coats of epoxy paint or topcoat, most standard kits will only provide enough for one coat. Add color flakes to concrete. This will hide any imperfections. Be sure to measure how many you’ll apply them. If your garage’s foundation rises above foot level at its bottom, you may want a coating to extend a few inches up the vertical surfaces. This will make cleaning the garage much easier. The next step is to decide if the finished floor should have an antiskid additive. This option may be beneficial in areas with high ice or rain probability.
The timing is everything once the floor is clean and ready to be coated. You should choose a day when your concrete isn’t damp from rain or when it’s between 50 to 80 degrees. Otherwise, the epoxy paint and hardener can bubble and crack. One mixing the epoxy paint with the hardener will leave you with about 2 hours to apply it. This means that you need to plan how to best paint the garage floor. Waiting between each step is the hardest part. Drying time is typically 12-24 hours. After the floor has dried completely, it is important to wait 72 hours before parking your car on the floor.
Two of the most common problems with epoxy floor coatings are that they wear out too quickly because it’s not industrial-grade, even though it has been claimed to be. This, however, is not a warranty issue. The epoxy after time may also start to peel. The most common reason you will hear is that the epoxy was not properly prepped.
The temperature of your tires can reach 180 degrees. If you use epoxy less than 10 Mils in dry thickness. It won’t be able to absorb heat. The epoxy you use will not be thick enough to absorb heat from hot tires.
Epoxy flooring does have one other drawback. It is more labor-intensive than installing rollout mat garage floors or interlocking tile garage floors. There also have dry periods inbetween coats, because of these the epoxy flooring process can take up to 2 days.
It can vary and it is almost the same answer that you get for how long a car will last. The quality of epoxy used, floor preparation quality and traffic all affect epoxy longevity. A good quality epoxy coating and a military-grade topcoat will last for 20 years in a garage. Topcoats can be applied in a single step. You only need to sand it lightly with 120grit.
For acid etching, you should allow for 2 days. While the labor required is approximately 3-5 hours, it’s important to remember that you must wait for your floor to dry after acid etching. Then you need each layer of coating to dry. This extends the time by 2-3 days.
Yes. We offer several systems that are suitable for commercial use with or without color flakes. Contact our team for more information about our Commercial Epoxy Systems. Even “Garage Floor Epoxy” can be used for commercial applications, provided that the epoxy flooring primer has been applied and the military-grade topcoat is chosen. Metallic Epoxy Flooring can be used in commercial applications. It has three layers that use high performance primer, military-grade metallic epoxy, and 4 mg abrasion resistance rated topcoat.
Okay so this is a tricky question. Let’s answer this question with some caveats. Epoxy coatings can be purchased for less than $100.00 at a Big Box Store or mega-online retailer. You have many options. There are water-based, polyurea, and cycloaliphatics. They all have their advantages. Military grade epoxy systems are available for various applications. We don’t have one solution that works for all. The average DIY military grade epoxy floor kit costs between $1.15 – 2.25/sf, depending on whether you use a primer or topcoat, if color flakes are required, and what type of epoxy system is being installed.
You must also consider your total cost of ownership. Let’s say we have a $3,000 garage epoxy flooring that will last up to 20+ years before needing to be renewed. Take the average epoxy off-the-shelf that costs about $200 and it will last for 2-3 years before it needs to be repainted. Which epoxy is actually more expensive in time and materials? Which is better value? The one you need to continually redo or one that lasts twenty years. Another thing to remember about epoxy coatings is their tendency to look shabby faster than you think. You will need to start over when it is time to redecorate. New epoxy garage floors will need only a light sanding and a fresh coat of clear solution, while more worn floors require more work. Our epoxy will last indefinitely. The choice is yours to make: do you choose the epoxy with the lowest upfront cost and the most frequent recoating? This is without even considering the labor required to empty your garage and redo your floors over and over again.
Polyurea concrete finishes are an excellent choice if your budget allows for more investment upfront, but you want a lasting coating.
