An epoxy floor coating can be made from two parts. It is easy to mix and adheres to any concrete floor, garage or other surface. Your floor will look much better than any conventional paint. It will have a very high gloss finish that will not only make it look great but also waterproof, mold, and mildewproof. An epoxy floor coating is stain resistant once it has cured. It is easy to clean like a Teflon pan.
After 30 years of experience, we know that for garage duty vehicle traffic, you need a 20-mg or lower abrasion rating. The military grade topcoat version is ideal for garages with big SUVs and tractor trailers. It can take all abuse that you can give it. Commercial duty traffic applications with pallet-jacks, forklifts and shop work (commercial or residence) must be less than 10mgs. If you don’t want the color flake look, the Commercial Package is ideal for garages. Also, we recommend that you do not use color flakes in your work shop. You won’t be able to find dropped parts on flake floors. If you are looking for industrial epoxy floor coatings or if you just want to get the best, most heavy-duty floor coating available, you will need a coating that is 23 mils thick and has a 6 mg rating. Our ultra military system is specifically made for these types of projects. It comes with a coating thickness of 23-30 mils and a rating of 4mg loss.
We have sold every kind of epoxy garage floor. Over the last 30 years, we have tested and installed every type of garage floor epoxy so we know what works and what doesn’t. There isn’t a perfect epoxy coating that will work in every application. There are many epoxy systems and epoxies that we offer. An epoxy floor coating that is not intended for use is one of the most common mistakes.
We find that 100% Aliphatic combined with a true, urethane epoxy topcoat is the best all-around epoxy garage floor. The abrasion loss rating of this topcoat should be equal to normal traffic loads. If your budget permits, you can use a primer to improve adhesion and increase coating thickness. These are all great things to consider when building an epoxy garage floors.

Epoxy is the best choice of all flooring options. Epoxy is very versatile. It can be used in almost all applications, as opposed to rubber roll-out mats that might not suit certain floor types. Epoxy gives a dramatic look, is inexpensive and lasts a long time, and is simple to install. It’s also waterproof and resistant to mold and mildew.
Want to make your garage floor shine? You will feel like you are driving into a showroom when you return home with a shiny, colorful epoxy garage floor coating.
Epoxying your garage flooring is worth it. It gives you a professional look and resists oil stains. You can hide any imperfections in the concrete below with color chips or custom paint colors, and you have the anti-skid additives to give you the grip you need when it colder conditions.
It is easy to apply an epoxy coating to concrete floors. But, like painting walls, the trick is in the preparation. The hard part of the application will seem easy after you’ve done the calculations and made your color choices.
For epoxy to bond properly, it requires a flat, slightly rough texture and a completely clean surface. You will need to fill any cracks or holes before applying epoxy. Concrete must be at least 60 days old, and it must not have been sealed to allow epoxy to stick. If water beads are on your floor, or the etching solution does not foam, it is likely that the sealer has been removed. If the floor is not peeling, it can be repainted.
It is not possible to clean the floor by simply stripping it. Cleaning and etching the floor should be completed thoroughly. Any grease or dirt could cause epoxy adhesion problems. There are many cleaners on the market. Make sure you read all ingredients before choosing which one is right for you. Chemical cleaners come in many forms, including harsh degreasers, etchers, and safer but less efficient organics. A machine known as a floor maintainer can be rented for around $40 per daily.
You will usually find epoxy coatings in kits that contain everything you need. After you have selected the one you like, you can determine if additional supplies are needed. Although manufacturers may recommend two coats of epoxy paint or topcoat, most standard kits will only provide enough for one coat. Add color flakes to concrete. This will hide any imperfections. Be sure to measure how many you’ll apply them. You may also want to coat the garage’s vertical surfaces if the garage’s foundation is higher than the floors surface. The next step is to decide if the finished floor should have an antiskid additive. This is a great option for areas that are prone to ice and rain.
It all comes down to the timing of applying the coating once the floor has been cleaned. It is important to choose a day when the concrete will not be dampened by rain and the temperature is between 50-80 degrees. Otherwise, it can bubble or peel. One mixing the epoxy paint with the hardener will leave you with about 2 hours to apply it. This means that you need to plan how to best paint the garage floor. Waiting between each step is the hardest part. Drying time is typically 12-24 hours. After the floor has dried completely, it is important to wait 72 hours before parking your car on the floor.
Epoxy floor coatings can wear prematurely due to its inability to meet industrial standards. This is not an issue with the warranty. The epoxy will start peeling off after excessive use. The most common reason you will hear is that the epoxy was not properly prepped.
Your vehicle’s tires can reach temperatures up to 180°F. If you use epoxy less than 10 Mils in dry thickness. It won’t be able to absorb heat. These epoxyes won’t be strong enough to prevent epoxy from being activated by hot tires.
Epoxy flooring has one other disadvantage. It requires more work than installing rollout garage mats, interlocking garage tiles, because it requires drying persiods between coatings. Therefore epoxy flooring takes 2-3 days to complete. An average 2 1/2 car garage will take 6-8 hours to complete.
It all depends on the epoxy used and how long it has been in use. Epoxy durability depends on how much traffic it receives and the quality of the epoxy used. A good quality epoxy coating and a military-grade topcoat will last for 20 years in a garage. Topcoats are easy to apply. Just a quick/light sanding with 120 grit is enough to make the floor look brand new.
Grinding your floor should take 2 days, acid etching takes 3 days. Although it takes about 3-5hrs to finish, each layer of coating must be allowed to dry. It can take up to 2 days for the entire process.
Yes. We offer several systems that are suitable for commercial use with or without color flakes. Talk to our team about our Commercial Epoxy Systems. Even “Garage Floor Epoxy” can be used for commercial applications, provided that the epoxy flooring primer has been applied and the military-grade topcoat is chosen. Metallic Epoxy Flooring works well in commercial applications, as it is made up of three layers with high-performance primer and high-build military grade metallic epoxy. The topcoat is military grade 4 mg and has a low abrasion rate.
Okay, this is a complicated question. We will answer your question with some caveats. There are two options where you can buy for as little as $100, go to a Big Box retailer or to an online megastore to buy epoxy coatings. Between us there are other types of epoxies, such as water-based, polyurea or cycloaliphatics, which are all discussed with their respective drawbacks. Military grade epoxy systems are available for various applications. We don’t have one solution that works for all. DIY military grade epoxy floor kits will average between $1.15 – $2.25/sf depending upon whether you use a primer, what kind of topcoat you apply, if you use color flakes or not, and what type of epoxy system your are looking to install.
But the most important thing is to think about what your cost of ownership is. For example, let’s consider a garage epoxy floor costing $3,000. It will remain looking great for at least 20 years before it needs a refresh. The average off-the-shelf epoxy will look new for about 2-3 years, until it has to be redone. What epoxy is more affordable in time and materials? You can choose to have it repainted every 20 years or you can keep it topped up as and when it needs it. Other epoxy coatings will look worse than you might think. When it comes time to replace them, you’ll need to start again. a new epoxy garage floor can be easy to sand and polish. A new coat of clear resin will be all that is needed to bring them back to their original glory. The epoxy underneath will last for years. You can choose to spend the money upfront and never have to recoat, or to buy the epoxy that you only use once knowing it has to be recoated soon. This doesn’t take into account the time it takes to empty out your garage every few years and redo your basement floor.
Polyurea concrete finishes are an excellent choice if your budget allows for more investment upfront, but you want a lasting coating.
