Epoxying your garage floor is worth the effort. It not only looks professional, but it also resists oil stains and beads of water. Color chips, custom paint colors and anti-skid additives give you the grip and protection you need in bad weather.
Can you epoxy garage floors yourself?
The process of applying an epoxy coating on concrete floors is the same as painting walls. But like painting, the real trick lies in the preparation. The hard part of the application will seem easy after you’ve done the calculations and made your color choices.
Epoxy bonds well when it has a slightly rough, and completely clean surface. It is important to patch any cracks or potholes before apply epoxy garage flooring. Concrete must be at a minimum 60 days old and without having a sealing applied to it in order to bond with the epoxy. Concrete must be at least 60 days old and not sealed to allow epoxy to adhere. If it does, water will either beads on it or the etching solutions doesn’t foam. In this case, you can remove the sealer using a chemical stripper. This means that you need to plan how to best paint the garage floor. Waiting is the hardest part. The drying time between each step can take anywhere from 12 to 24 hours. The floor must be dry for at least 72 hours after being completed.
What are the drawbacks to epoxy garage flooring?
Two of the most common problems with epoxy floor coatings are that they wear out too quickly because it’s not industrial-grade, even though it has been claimed to be. This, however, is not a warranty issue. The epoxy can also begin to peel. The floor will likely not have been properly prepared. This is usually due to the epoxy quality.

You must also consider your total cost of ownership. Let’s say we have a $3,000 garage epoxy flooring that will last up to 20+ years before needing to be renewed. Now consider the average epoxy floor that you can buy off the shelf for $200. This epoxy floor will look great for around 2-3 years before it has to get redone. So which epoxy costs less in time and materials? Which do you consider as better value? The one that needs to be repainted regularly or the one that can last 20 years. Another thing to remember about epoxy coatings is their tendency to look shabby faster than you think. You will need to start over when it is time to redecorate. New epoxy garage floors will need only a light sanding and a fresh coat of clear solution, while more worn floors require more work. The epoxy underneath will last for years. The choice is yours to make: do you choose the epoxy with the lowest upfront cost and the most frequent recoating? This doesn’t take into account the time it takes to empty out your garage every few years and redo your basement floor.
